1 Vào năm thứ mười lăm dưới triều đại của Sê-sa Ti-bê-ri-út, khi Bôn-xơ Phi-lát làm thống đốc xứ Giu-đê, Hê-rốt làm tể tướng xứ Ga-li-lê, em trai ông là Phi-líp làm tể tướng xứ I-tu-rê-a-Trachônít, và Ly-sa-ni-a làm tể tướng xứ A-bi-len, 1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 2 trong thời kỳ An-ne và Cai-pha làm thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm, lời Đức Chúa Trời đã đến với Giăng, con trai của Xa-cha-ri trong đồng vắng. 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 Ông đi khắp miền quanh sông Giô-đanh, rao giảng về sự nhúng mình trong nước để được tha tội, 3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 4 như đã chép trong sách tiên tri Ê-sai, Có tiếng kêu trong đồng vắng rằng: Hãy dọn đường cho Chúa, làm cho thẳng các nẻo Ngài. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Mọi thung lũng sẽ được lấp đầy, mọi núi đồi sẽ được san bằng, mọi đường quanh co sẽ được uốn thẳng, đường gồ ghề sẽ được san bằng, 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 và mọi người sẽ thấy sự cứu rỗi của Đức Chúa Trời. 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
